In an effort to rebuild a strong grain supply chain for Philadelphia and the Mid-Atlantic region, Fair Food has partnered with Penn State Extension, University of the Sciences Brewing Science Program, and Deer Creek Malthouse to map the farmers currently growing grain in Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, as well as the distributors and middle-of-the-chain processors currently involved in the grain supply chain in this region. A strong grain supply chain will enable small and mid-size producers to take advantage of emerging market opportunities around small grains.
We are currently raising funds to host a one-day, collaborative symposium for the stakeholders of this project in the winter of 2017, during which we will present our findings of the mapping process and discuss next steps. Both the map and the symposium are critical to determine the gaps and opportunities for developing the grain value chain in the Greater Philadelphia region.
