This week’s member spotlight comes on the heels of the 100th annual Pennsylvania Farm Show, the largest indoor agricultural event in the country. Despite that long history, the Farm Show’s cheese competition is only in its second year. And for the second year in a row, Fair Food member business The Farm at Doe Run took home first place in the Best in Show competition for their Seven Sisters, an aged Gouda style that’s a bestseller at the Farmstand. Their St. Malachi, another Farmstand favorite, took third place, and Seven Sisters also won its class.
Cheesemakers Sam Kennedy and Matt Hettlinger—a chef and a food scientist, respectively, by training—make artisan cheese from the milk of the pastured cows, sheep, and goats raised at Doe Run Farm, while Stacey Gentile handles events, sales, and marketing. Their team makes a wide range of cheeses year-round, including some other favorites, such as lush, robiola-style Hummingbird, funky Bathed in Victory (washed in a rotating selection of heady Victory beers), and even a toasty, coffee-washed Appenzeller-style wheel, Hickory on the Hill.
Congratulations to the Doe Run team on such a great showing at the Farm Show! Be sure to stop by the Farmstand to pick up a wedge of the winners.
