A year-end message from Lindsay Gilmour, outgoing Chair, Fair Food Board of Directors: My history with Fair Food began in 2001 when Ann Karlen connected me to farmers to supply my catering business. I fell in love with the organization that enabled me to serve simply splendid food to my customers, and introduced me to the farmers that grew it!
I've been hooked on Fair Food ever since, and it has been my pleasure and privilege to help pilot several of the Fair Food programs that assist farmers in overcoming the challenges of competing in an ever larger and more complex marketplace. Highlights include the first "Local Grower Local Buyer" event in 2003; the "Wholesale Readiness" workshop series which introduced many farmers to the wholesale marketplace; and working with farmers and food service directors at schools and hospitals for the Farm to Institution program. Through all this and more, we created opportunities for our regional farmers to thrive.
After six exciting years serving on the Fair Food Board of Directors I am back to working with farmers again, running Fair Food's Group GAP Pilot Project, a food safety program that is helping growers comply with food safety regulations. We are working one-on-one with more than 150 farming families, walking their fields and sitting with them around the kitchen table to discuss what food safety means for them, and how they can further build food safety routines into their everyday operations.
While the topic is food safety, the greater impact of a program like Group GAP is helping these farming families satisfy the demands of the supermarkets and distributors they sell to. Unless their farms pass a food safety audit each year they will lose access to their share of the wholesale market and we will lose those farms.
Help Fair Food ensure that family farmers continue to have fair access to the food system by working to bring fresh, safe, local food from family farms to area restaurants, schools and hospitals, and grocery stores. Please join me in supporting the work of Fair Food generously this year.
