Fresh & New: September 19-24

At the Farmstand, we are loving this in-between season: crisp weather, a rainbow of colorful produce, and the best of summer and fall together for a short time. It's also a busy time for us: We're finalizing details of Thanksgiving turkey pre-orders (!), prepping for events at the Farmstand (Beer and cheese tasting this afternoon, Vera Pasta tasting with Chef Joe D'Andrea on Friday) and in Reading Terminal (OysterFest on Friday evening - only a few tickets left!). So here's a quick rundown of what's exciting and new.  

Cheese: We're replenishing lots of cheesy goodies for fall this week - BOMBOLONI is back from Doe Run! And we're getting more Pipe Dreams' ASH LOG and DEMI-SEC CROTTINS, plus a limited amount of GOOSEY NIGHT, the gift of goat cheese wrapped in fig and spice bush leaves soaked in Dad's Hat Rye from Cranberry Creek. Also joining our fromage family this week: Conebella Farm cheeses! This fifth-generation dairy raises pastured Ayreshire cows that are fed a combination of grass and grain for the best product. We're starting with their savory SMOKED CHEDDAR, but look for more of Conebella's raw milk cheddars and spreads in the coming weeks. And don't forget to stop by the Farmstand from 3-5pm today for our monthly cheese and beer tasting. We're featuring Keswick Creamery's Stilton-esque Blue Suede Moo and Talleggio-style washed rind Talleginator (washed in Troegenator) paired with Round Guys beers.

 

Fruit: PEACHES, PLUMS, RASPBERRIES, MELONS, and FIGS are on their way out, but we've got the tail end of these crops this week. It might be the last week for Giovanni's amazing Paradiso figs, but look for info on this mysterious man and delicious fruit in this month's Grid magazine and in the Inquirer today. However, there is reason to nullrejoice: GRAPES - in pink AGAWAM, blue FREDONIA (hail!), and green NIAGARA - are in season for just a short time! We're also working on getting some CONCORDS - when we do, we'll announce it on our Facebook page, so like us to get updates! GALA, CORTLAND, JONATHAN, SMOKEHOUSE, HONEYCRISP, and FUJI APPLES have arrived for all your baking, saucing, buttering, and crunching needs. PEARS are also here, null including our first boutique Asian pears from Subarashii Kudamono- the petite, pale-yellow ASAJU PEAR, is crisp and juicy with a light flavor. Beechwood Orchards brings us ruddy BOSC and rosy RED BARTLETTS, too. And banana-like PAWPAWS are on the horizon - we hope to have some this weekend!

 

Veggies: TOMATOES are tapering off, but we still have the full slate this week - SUNGOLD, RED SALADETTE, MIXED HEIRLOOMS, and fat red SLICERS. EGGPLANTS (featuring MIXED GREEN and ROSA BIANCA this week) and SUMMER SQUASH (YELLOW and PATTYPAN) are back for a shonullrt time. PEPPERS of all kinds are still going strong, and we now have the official hottest pepper in the world, the TRINIDAD SCORPION, out for sale. Handle with care, of course.

 

Meat: Don't forget that the Farmstand now sells Shore Catch's sustainably caught, local seafood from the VikingVillage dock in Barnegat Light, NJ! Pick up GOLDEN TILEFISH, SWORDFISH, SUSHI-GRADE YELLOWFIN TUNA, or tender JUMBO SCALLOPS for a healthy and sustainable dinner. Also new this week in the meat freezer: Lots of lamb cuts from Jamison Farm in Latrobe, PA! John and Sukey Jamison produce some of the best lamb in the country, and we're proud to stock their product. Look for CHOPS, SHANKS, BREAST, SHOULDER, LEG, and KABOB CUBES, along with their famous LAMB PIES and MERGUEZ SAUSAGE.
