Every summer - right about the time local produce goes wild and my third floor apartment starts to feel like a sauna - I get a little overwhelmed when it comes to feeding myself. Going out to eat (in an air-conditioned restaurant!) doesn't feel like the budget-unfriendly cop-out it sometimes does. Snacks (sharp cheddar, crackers, and pickles - King of Snax to me) are expanded slightly and pronounced dinner, perhaps with a side of berries if I'm feeling particularly ambitious. With the exception of a few intensive canning sessions (20 pints of garlic dill pickles! Should last me till next year), I don't even pretend to be inspired to cook. Midsummer malaise rules. Until HEIRLOOM TOMATOES come in. Heirloom Tomatoe

Then, the bread/cheese/vegetable stack framework expands from comforting-but-lazy to indulgent, delicious, and truly of the moment. You can even skip the bread and cheese and follow this recipe (think of these 'maters' as an investment in your own future happiness). This week, heirlooms have come from Taproot Farm, and they've also brought us ROMANO BEANS (like a green bean, but flatter, more tender, and generally more awesome) and more SUNGOLD TOMATOES. Combine those guys with some stale bread, SLICING CUCUMBERS and FRESH SHALLOTS from Paradise Organics, and BASIL (in RED, GREEN, and CINNAMON!) from Plowshare Farm to make an amazing panzanella. The best part? You don't even have to turn on the oven (well, maybe just the toaster oven).

And if you want to learn a little more about heirloom veggies, hit the Farmstand from 3pm-5pm on Thursday - we'll be sampling some of our favorites with the Mural Arts Project as part of their What We Sow campaign. Come check it out!

Fruitwise, Fifer Orchards' peaches are coming in  Peachesnicely, and we got our absolute last delivery of Three Springs' SOUR CHERRIES on Tuesday. We've still got a limited number of SWEET CHERRIES from Beechwood Orchards, but after they're gone, they're gone - so grab them while you can.

We're introducing some great new baked goods this weekend! On Friday, look for our first deliveries of sweet and savory treats from Fair Food member Brulee Bakery. We're stocking their SPINACH CROISSANT (my favorite), BRIOCHE BEIGNETS (who needs cronuts?), in-season BLUEBERRY MUFFINS, and some gluten-free delicacies - COOKIES in CORNMEAL-LIME and CHOCOLATE CHIP and jewel-like little FRENCH MACARONS. G.F. and non-G.F. staff loved them! Brulee uses local, organic DAISY FLOUR, local dairy and cage-free eggs, and local produce in their recipes, so show them some love. Philly Bread- Philly Muffin

And that's not all: Philly Bread will also be making its  Farmstand debut this week! Baker/biker Pete Merzbacher's West Philly-based operation creates a delicious crumb across the board, but his bestselling item is the PHILLY MUFFIN - a toothsome sourdough take on the English version, with all the nooks and crannies your hungry heart desires (plus a lot more flavor). We start stocking PMs on Friday, and Pete will be at the Farmstand on Friday and Saturday from 11am-1pm with samples in ORIGINAL and CINNAMON RAISIN.
