Farmstand Product List June 19-25, 2013

Fresh & New!
Alex Jones, Farmstand Product Manager

It took a bit longer than usual, but produce is popping everywhere - as Jane Lear (one of my favorite food writers) says, "there's never too much June." We're living in a transitional time for local food - so exciting! - but that means that for every emergent crop (carrots! berries!), another is on its way out. Here's a breakdown so you can make the most of your seasonal shopping this last week of spring.

GET IT WHILE YOU CAN: STRAWBERRIES, y'all. I didn't want to get your hopes up but the organic farmers at Taproot and Landisdale Farms are still providing pints. Put icebox cake on your to-do list (recipe in the sidebar) - it's chilling in my fridge as I type. SNOW and SUGAR SNAP PEAS could disappear any minute (as soon as the heat cranks up) but are going strong this week. GARLIC SCAPES aBlueberryre still plentiful but will soon fade as the bulbs mature. Deep red batons of RHUBARB are still hanging in there. When seasons overlap, I like to experiment with different produce combinations. If only there were another berry besides straw- to marry with tart red rhu...

WELL HELLO THERE: ORGANIC BLUEBERRIES are in the house! Zone 7 brings them from Little Buck Organics in Hammonton, NJ - we're so lucky to have the Blueberry Capital of the World as our backyard (check out this NYT article from a few years ago on the challenges of growing blues organically). Breathtaking RAINBOW CARROTS from Sunny Harvest Co-op have arrived, as have Flaim Farms' ORANGE CARROTS - thin and perfect. Trim their tops before you put a bunch in the fridge to keep it fresh longer, or ask our staff to cut them off for you - Operations Manager Anne's bunny Ella turns up her nose at the roots in favor of the leafy greens, so she'll take them all. Mulberries

Also new this week: WHITE MULBERRIES foraged by David Siller are juicy and sweet, and he's also gathered bags of deep green NEW ZEALAND SPINACH (try some down under pasta), Plowshare Farms brings leafy, stout bunches of SORREL - lemony and bright, cook it up or add to salads for considerable zing. And Landisdale's CANDY ONIONS are big and bunched - choose from RED TROPEA or pale white WALLA WALLA varieties.

THE KING OF LARD: Please welcome another heritage breed pig to our selection of sustainably and humanely raised meats: the Mangalitsa, a fluffy throwback from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, from Mosefund Farm in Branchville, NJ. This porker comes to us in the form of charcuterie, which isn't always easy to get locally produced in our region. We'll start selling Mangalitsa GUANCIALE (jowl bacon), PANCETTA (Italian-style belly bacon), and SPECK (German-style ham) on Friday - try some with your cheese order this weekend!
