Despite a day off (Reading Terminal closed—imagine that!), power outages for some of our farmers, and delayed deliveries, our farmers and their crops made it through the storm unharmed. We should be back up to usual product levels by Friday afternoon. However, Sandy did bring the chilly weather with her—it’s a good chance this will be the last week for summer holdovers like SLICING TOMATOES, BLACK EGGPLANT, CUBANELLE PEPPERS, and TROMBOCINO SQUASH. Try that trombocino while you can—it’s similar to summer squash, but just a little firmer and its texture holds up very well as leftovers when sautéed, roasted, or steamed. Speaking of squashes, it's time to get your gourd on! Check out our gorgeous (and delicious) heirloom pumpkins: pale orange LONG ISLAND CHEESE (considered one of the best for pies), lumpy and orange/green IRAN PUMPKIN (great for soups but not baking), voluptuous FAIRYTALE with a coppery patina and deeply colored flesh (my personal favorite for pies), and bump-studded PEANUT PUMPKIN (picturesque and scrumptious). Choose one to decorate your home or table (and pick up some multicolored ORNAMENTAL CORN, too), then roast it and turn the flesh into your favorite fall dishes. Maybe pick up some delicious local MAPLE SYRUP and try your hand at Food In Jars' fantastic maple-pumpkin butter recipe?

Finally, former Farmstand Cheesemonger, Paul Lawler, sent us some love in the form of delicious cheese this week—for a limited time only, we will be offering Cricket Creek Farm's rare taleggio-style cheese, Tobasi. According to Paul, "it was made from the milk of the first orchard grass and rye after the worst New England drought in 60 years—the last rich milk from the end of summer. It's incredibly buttery, with a savory orange-to-pink hued patina. And that crust, the rind, is a deliciously bready integral piece to the taste. It is aged 70 days and comes, of course, from the farm's own Certified Humane Brown Swiss/Jersey herd." Come and get it while supplies last!
